Early Warning Signs of Food Allergies in Dogs

People who are dog parents have frequent concerns about food allergies in their pets since it is a common scenario. Allergic reactions of some food items can be frustrating for both dogs and their owners and there are certain symptoms of food allergies in dogs that one can look out for. Some of these include infections and itchy skin. These signs can help people decide better for their dogs when it comes to choosing their meals.

1. Watery Eyes
This can be one of the several symptoms of food allergies in dogs. If your pet is scratching his/her eyes more often than usual, it can be a sign of some sort of allergy. Also, a clogged tear duct or some kind of goopy discharge around the eyes can be a signal for food allergies.

2. Recurring Ear Infections
If your pet has to undergo more than three treatments for ear infections in a year, it is indeed beyond normal and can be a sign of allergic reaction. Dogs with such infections tend to have brown or black buildup in their ears plus they keep shaking their head in a persistent manner and also scratch the ear more frequently. This issue does not resolve even after regular bathing and cleaning of the pets.

3. Bronze or Red Nail Beds
If you observe that the base of your pet’s nails is a shade of red, it can be one of the symptoms of food allergies in dogs. This is a warning of inflammatory immune response in dogs and needs attention. The nails of the dogs are generally white and should remain that way.

4. Dull Coat and Itchy Skin
Itchy skin is as irritating as it sounds and, if your adorable pet is continuously itching at his skin, it can be a sign of some kind of food allergy. Rigorous itching can often lead to hair loss in dogs. The skin where the itching occurs becomes red, inflamed and dry plus if there is an allergy then the dogs do not get relief even from bathing or over-the-counter medicines.

5. Bronzing Around the Lips
Yet another addition on the list of symptoms of food allergies in dogs is the inflammation around the dogs’ lips. The skin around the lips becomes a shade of pink and that is not normal. This can be a sign of yeast colonization and it is triggered by some sort of food allergy.

Symptoms of food allergies in dogs are mostly quite clear and easy to figure out. Dog parents can look out for them and choose food items as per their pet’s need and tolerance.
